The formula
Tail in millimeters = stitches × π × needle diameter in mm × 1.10 + 200. Divide by 10 for centimeters or 25.4 for inches.
A worked example
For 98 stitches on a 4.5 mm needle, the heuristic gives about 1,724 mm, or 172.4 cm (67.9 inches). This includes 10% over the needle-wrap estimate and an additional 20 cm for finishing.
Common mistakes
Do not confuse needle diameter with circumference, or millimeters with centimeters. Tension, cast-on technique, and yarn texture affect consumption. This estimate is not the amount of yarn needed for the whole project.
