The formula
Raw cast-on = target width × stitches / measured distance. Valid cast-on = repeat size × whole repeats + extra stitches.
A worked example
At 20 stitches per 4 inches, 19 inches needs 95 stitches. For a multiple of 6 plus 2, the nearby valid counts are 92 (18.4 inches) and 98 (19.6 inches). Both are equally close, so the calculator recommends 98.
Common mistakes
Do not add edge stitches twice. If your pattern says multiple of 6 plus 2, enter 6 and 2, not 8. This calculator requires at least one full repeat and does not choose garment ease for you.
Questions People Ask
What should I enter for plain stockinette?
Use a multiple of 1 and 0 extra stitches. The result will be the nearest whole stitch count.
What if the smaller size is closer?
The closest valid size is recommended. If both are equally close, the larger count wins. Always check the displayed width against your fit requirements.
Does this estimate long-tail yarn?
